LED Lighting and High-Density Planting Enhance the Cost-Efficiency of Halimione Portulacoides Extraction Units for Integrated Aquaculture

چکیده
Halophytes are salt-tolerant plants that can be used to extract dissolved inorganic nutrients from saline aquaculture effluents under a production framework commonly known as Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA). Halimione portulacoides (L.) Aellen (common name: sea purslane) is an edible saltmarsh halophyte traditionally consumed by humans living near coastal wetlands and considered promising extractive species for IMTA. To better understand its potential IMTA applications, the present study investigates how artificial lighting plant density affect productivity capacity nitrogen phosphorous in hydroponic conditions mimic effluents. Plant growth was unaffected type of employed—white fluorescent lights vs. blue-white LEDs—but LED systems were more energy-efficient, with 17% reduction light energy costs. Considering planting density, high-density units 220 m−2 produced biomass per unit area (54.0–56.6 g day−1) than did low-density (110 m−2; 34.4–37.1 extracted phosphorus. Overall, H. easily cultivated hydroponically using nutrient-rich effluents, where LEDs employed alternative promote higher yields extraction efficiencies.

Mercury in salt marshes ecosystems: Halimione portulacoides as biomonitor.
Mercury concentrations were quantified in Halimione portulacoides (roots, stems and leaves) as well as in sediments from eight Portuguese estuarine systems, covering seventeen salt marshes with distinct degrees of mercury contamination. The concentration of mercury in the sediments ranged from 0.03 to 17.0 microg g(-1). The results show that the accumulation of mercury differed according to the...
متن کاملMercury mobility in a salt marsh colonised by Halimione portulacoides.
The present study intends to increase the knowledge on the mobility of mercury in a salt marsh colonised by Halimione portulacoides. Mercury distribution in the sediment layers and its incorporation into the plant biomass were assessed, as well as the potential export of mercury from the contaminated area to the adjacent environment. Mercury pools in the sediments ranged from 560 to 943 mg m(-2...

Heavy metal accumulation in Halimione portulacoides: intra- and extra-cellular metal binding sites.
Salt marsh plants can sequestrate and inherently tolerate high metal concentrations found in salt marsh sediments. This work intended to understand the Halimione portulacoides (L.) Aellen strategies to prevent metal toxicity, by investigating the metal location in different plant organs and in the cell. A sequential extraction was performed on leaves, stems and roots of H. portulacoides in orde...
متن کاملassessment of the efficiency of s.p.g.c refineries using network dea
data envelopment analysis (dea) is a powerful tool for measuring relative efficiency of organizational units referred to as decision making units (dmus). in most cases dmus have network structures with internal linking activities. traditional dea models, however, consider dmus as black boxes with no regard to their linking activities and therefore do not provide decision makers with the reasons...
